This overview describes the system used by journals owned by Versita. With some alterations it is used also by other journals published by Versita.
Each paper that arrives at a Versita journal is registered in Editorial Manager (EM) - online manuscript tracking system. The steps involved in processing the manuscript are outlined below.
-
The author uploads the manuscript directly to EM, the pdf file is generated and after author’s approval the Managing Editor is informed about the new submission. Then the Managing Editor of the journal sends it to an appropriate Editor. From this step the manuscript receives an individual identification code (ID).
-
The submitted manuscript is initially reviewed by the Editor, who is an expert in the relevant field. (S)he then sends it to selected referees for specialist review. During the review process, the Editor may ask the author to make revisions according to the outcome of the peer review.
-
If necessary, authors introduce corrections and upload a revised version of their manuscript to the system.
-
The Editor refers the revised manuscript back to the referees. On the basis of those second reviews, the Editor decides whether the manuscript can be further considered for publication or not. If corrections are satisfactory in general but the manuscript still requires some revision, the Editor sends it to authors for final minor corrections.
-
The Editor of the relevant field makes the final decision whether the manuscript should be published or not. Only in the case of a conflict (between referees, between editor and referees, between author and editor) is the Editor-in-Chief asked to make the final decision.
-
The Managing Editor officially informs the author about the final decision.
-
The manuscript then undergoes language editing, technical editing, proofreading and finally is published electronically.
The standard peer review process together with language and technical handling of the manuscript may take up to 3-4 months; possibly longer if the author is asked to make revisions to the manuscript. All the steps listed above involving peer review process are taken inside Editorial Manager system and authors can check the status of their submission throughout the entire process. Any further processing is performed outside the system and authors are informed about its progress via email.
