ebrary, a leading provider of e-content services and technology and Versita, a leading STM e-publisher and e-publishing technology marketer in Central and Eastern Europe, announced a strategic partnership that will make e-books from leading academic and professional publishers in Central and Eastern Europe available to libraries and other markets worldwide.

Under terms of the agreement, Versita will aggregate English language e-books published by Central and Eastern European publishers and offer them to ebrary for distribution, under both subscription and purchase models. ebrary's global customer base includes thousands of libraries and other organizations, serving more than 12.5 million end-users.

The investment group Ambient Sound Investments (ASI) established by the co-founders of Skype has become an investor in Versita. This will support Versita in becoming the leading scientific online publisher and electronic publishing technology provider in Central and Eastern Europe.

The cooperation with ASI will help Versita bring world class electronic publishing technology solutions such as MetaPress, Editorial Manager and ebrary to scientific and professional content publishers of Central and Eastern Europe. Versita will also set up local language platforms for e-content distribution in the countries of the region.

About 200 scientific journal editors and book publishers from Poland participated in the conference that presented the world's leading solutions for online editing, publishing and distribution, which are marketed in Central and Eastern Europe by Versita: MetaPress, Editorial Manager and ebrary. This event was held in Warsaw on March 17, 2008 and inaugurated the marketing of Editorial Manager by Versita and made a preliminary announcement on ebrary.

MetaPress is the leading solution for online hosting and distribution of scientific journals, used by over 2,500 journals from over 60 publishers, including such well know as Springer. Versita already provides MetaPress solution to about 60 journals. Editorial Manager (product of Aries Systems) is the global leader among systems for online submission and tracking of manuscripts for scientific journals. It is used by over 2,700 journals from many publishers, including Elsevier and Springer. ebrary is the largest online platform for hosting and distribution of e-books, offering now more than 170,000 titles from over 280 publishers.

At the conference Versita also presented its offer for high quality journals to be co-published by Versita and Springer. And the event created the opportunity to announce the investment of venture capital fund Ambient Sounds Investments (ASI) in Versita (as reported in the separate news below).

The presentations were made by Versita business partners: Richard Steedon, Sales Manager, Europe, MetaPress; Lyndon Holmes, CEO, Aries Systems; Roswitha Nottebaum, General Manager, Aries GmbH; Christopher Warnock, CEO, ebrary. Additionally, Professor Dariusz Ucinski from the International Journal of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science presented its experience in using MetaPress and Versita services, and Professor Jerzy Zielinski from the journal Opto-Electronic Review described how the Versita/Springer co-publishing program works for his journal.

Versita has begun to offer MetaPress electronic publishing solution in Ukraine. The first introductory meeting took place at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in Kiev on January 31, 2008. It was hosted by Academician Yaroslav Yatskiv, a member of the Presidium of the Academy responsible for its publishing activity. Representatives of Ukrainian scholarly journals took part in the meeting. In spring 2008 Versita will organize in Kiev a general presentation of the solutions that Versita offers to journal editors and book publishers and authors. The National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine may co-host that event.

Professor Vyacheslav Kalnitsky, the editor of the Central European Journal of Mathematics, became a member of the Natural Sciences Subject Committee of the Campus Europae, European University Foundation under the patronage of the Luxembourg Government.

Universities from different European countries created a new dimension of collaboration, which will clearly exceed the current degree of international cooperation. Currently 17 European universities are involved in the project.

We would like to congratulate Professor Kalnitsky on his new appointment.

Professor Stephen Smale, a member of Editorial Advisory Board of Central European Journal of Mathematics has been awarded the 2006/7 Wolf Prize in Mathematics for his groundbreaking contributions that have played a fundamental role in shaping differential topology, dynamical systems, mathematical economics, and other subjects in mathematics.
In 1966 Professor Smale received the Fields Medal for his work on differential topology. Professor Smale's recent research interest is theoretical computer science.

It was launched in the spring of 2001 and has been rapidly adopted by scholarly societies and publishers. Prof. Krzysztof Matyjaszewski , Editor-in-Chief of Central European Journal of Chemistry has been awarded a doctor honoris causa of the Technical Univeristy of Lodz – the university he graduated from. He is renowned for developing atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). In a list of the top 100 scientists compiled in 2007 by Essential Science Indicators, Prof. Matyjaszewski ranked 4th among all fields of chemistry. Matyjaszewski's groundbreaking paper on ATRP, first published in 1995, has spawned considerable industrial and academic research in this field of controlled polymerization and has been cited more than 1,500 times.

John Regazzi has joined Versita as a limited partner. John is a renowned figure in the world of electronic publishing. He is the former board member and CEO of Elsevier Inc, the US division of Elsevier, and was also the Managing Director of Market Development at Elsevier, and Managing Director of Elsevier Electronic Publishing, globally. John Regazzi is a full professor of management engineering and former dean of the College of Information and Computer Science at the Long Island University. Professor Robert R. Gałązka a member of Editorial Advisory Board of Central European Journal of Physics has been awarded by Polish Physical Society with The Marian Smoluchowski Medal for his pioneering studies of the semimagnetic semiconductors. He is head of Division of Physics of Semimagnetic Semiconductors in Institute of Physics, Polish Academy of Sciences. The Marian Smoluchowski Medal is the highest decoration of the Polish Physical Society accredited to the physicists for outstanding contribution to selected topic of physics or for particular merit in the development of physical sciences in Poland. We would like to congratulate Professor Gałązka on this outstanding achievement and wish him every further success in the future!
