REVIEW

• A scholarly review of the literature relevant to the topic in areas of particular interest and current importance in the field of biology
• Contains a broad, balanced and fair perspective of the topic; identifies trends and/or gaps in the literature or provides a new synthesis of existing literature; identifies directions for future research
• Color illustrations should be used to highlight the major concepts, models, or techniques described in the body of the text; lengthy tables should be limited

MINI-REVIEW

• Brief analysis of a focused topic on advances in the field of biology
• Discusses recent experimental research; highlights recent developments in fast-moving areas and areas that require additional research

RESEARCH ARTICLE

• Paper based on original research that make a novel and important contribution to the understanding of any area of biology

COMMUNICATION

• Format intended for the presentation of brief observations that do not warrant full-length papers
• An empirical report resulting from analysis of collected data to address one or more research questions and/or hypotheses

RAPID COMMUNICATION

• Format intended to present new information of exceptional novelty, importance or significant interest to the broad readership of CEJB
• Contains exciting, controversial and/or provocative observations, data of exceptional novelty, results of high urgency
• Authors are asked to provide an explanation why their contribution should be handled via rapid channel
• Publication decision strictly relay on the enthusiastic recommendations of the reviewers

COMMENTARY

• A forum for presentation of a scientific argument, extended discussions or synthesis providing novel insights into a significant question or issue in biology
• Raises issues of interest to the scholarly community; initiates or focuses discussion
• Guest Commentaries are written in response to invitations issued by the editors and concern relevant topics

LETTER to the EDITOR

• A brief discussion, review, or re-analysis of a paper previously or currently published in CEJB
• Presents short, decisive observations of interest based on published data
• No figures/tables
